Measured Man 7 1-4

1.) How do Mill and Frege disagree with Russell about grammatical sentences and meaning?
Mill and Frege believe that the meaning of a sentence should only depend on on the meaning of the words that make up the sentence, while Russell believes that there may be grammatical sentences and apparently meaningful sentences without meaning.

2.)Abel provides 8 distinguishing features of meaning. Please provide your own examples of each.
  1. (Indication) "The rising smoke means fire"
  2. (Cause) " What does the dent in the car mean?"
  3. (Effect) "This means pain."
  4. (Intention) "I meant to take the trash out"
  5. (Explanation) "What does free mean?"
  6. (Purpose) "That act has no meaning"
  7. (Implication) "If there is a hurricane, we are not going"
  8. (Significance) "Does the fact you're here have any meaning?"
3.)Why does Abel believe that science and metaphysics is involved in the discussion of linguistic meaning?
Because he says "We can talk meaningfully about the word only if we take into account what the word is like." Which means that you can only think about a word if you know what it's like.

Good and Bad Presentations

As a class, we did fairly well on the presentations but we did have certain shortcomings. While on the whole, we did well, there were areas for improvement.
What we did well:
Outling the topic
Background on topic
Identifying Knowledge issues
and length of presentation

What we could improve:
Identifying the implications
Why it matters
and presenting the topic

I did okay, but kind of rushed through (didn't want to miss the bus) and dont think I got everything I want to get in.

What I did well:
Outling the topic
Background on topic
presenting topic
Identifying Knowledge issues

What could be improved:
Identifying the implications
Why it matters
length of presentation
